The author of the memoir, A Tale of Two Worlds, spoke to Bleacher News about how she’s navigating being black in a white culture and what it’s like to have to struggle for a better place to be.
What is the legacy of slavery and white supremacy?
What is slavery?
Is it a word?
I grew up in the south in Alabama.
We were all taught that white people owned slaves.
When we went to school, we were taught that black people were second-class citizens.
What is slavery to you?
I grew up white, but I still have family who are slave owners, who still own their children.
It’s a very painful thing to have a black family member who is a slave owner, who is also a slave.
What has it been like to grow up as a black woman in America?
It’s hard to tell.
It was a lot harder growing up as an African-American woman in the 1950s.
I don’t have a lot of family to talk to.
What’s your favorite thing to do?
I’m a big book reader.
I love The Color Purple, The Color White, The Hunger Games and Black Panther.
I’m a huge fan of Joss Whedon’s work, and I love the Black Panther comics, too.
What has it felt like to live as a Black woman in a black society?
It’s been very difficult, especially when it comes to social justice issues.
You have to deal with police brutality, racism, sexual assault and discrimination in our culture, and we’re fighting for everything.
We’re fighting to be treated like equal citizens, and when it’s not, it’s really hard.
How has your life changed since you wrote this book?
My life has changed so much.
I had a very hard time finding jobs and not being able to afford my rent.
So when I finally found a job, it was a huge relief because I didn’t have to work so hard.
When I had to go to college, I could pay my bills and go to my classes and work on my studies.
I grew out of slavery in the US.
I was living in Alabama when I was 12 years old, and in the ’50s, white people were teaching black people to read and write, and all of a sudden, I became a slave to the white system.
What changed my life?
I was so confused about what to do.
I didn ‘t have an identity.
My father was a farmer, so I was raised by my grandmother, who taught me to be obedient and obedient.
My mother, a nurse, was a housekeeper.
I never felt like I belonged in my own skin, because my mother was so smart and educated.
What I did have in common with my mother, though, was that I had an opportunity to learn to read.
What was the most important lesson that you learned?
I didn’ t think about it until I was a teenager.
What would you like to see more of?
There are many people in the world that are doing great things and we don’t need to think about why or what is going on.
When you get the chance to talk about race in America, you can be a leader.
You can speak out against racism.
What can people in your community do?
We can take a moment and look at our history and think about how we can work together.
There are so many good people in our communities who care about racial justice.
What are some of the things that people can do to help us change the system?
One of the most amazing things about this book is that it has been written by a Black mother, and a white mother.
I have no idea what would have happened if a white woman had written it.
But it would have been so much better.
I hope people listen.
The next book is coming out this summer, and hopefully we’ll have a chance to sit down and talk about it.
What else do you want to say to the readers?
This book has been a tremendous relief.
I think it’s going to be a blessing for many people who struggle with this issue.
I really hope that when you read this book, you’ll look at what we are dealing with and understand that we are all the same, and that we all bleed the same blood.
It makes me feel better to know that I’m not alone.
